Recorded in his hometown of Loveland, OH, Living Room captures DJD in his element. Here he plays piano (which if you can believe, is his 2nd instrument to the drums), and he plays songs he’s loved since his musical beginnings and compositions (his own & others’) that have become a part of his identity over time. We set up camp at Grailville retreat center for a total of 5 days (2 days in August & 3 days in November of 2011) to record these songs as they reverberated through the expansive wooden room. We wanted the result to sound just like the space in the moments that Dan & that somewhat rickety old piano flooded it with sound.
I’ve gotten to see Dan performing songs like this for several years now, in sound-checks & down-time on tour, in-between takes during recordings sessions, and off the road during rehearsals at home or at parties or pretty much anywhere he could get to a piano. That’s why I’m so excited about this record. Now everyone can hear this beautiful music that seems to just pour out of him. He covers some ground in these 11 tracks - from songs from the American South, the mountains of Wales & the heart of Mexico, to Romantic-period Europe & Soviet-era Russia, all of them coming to life at the hands of an imaginative & generous performer.
Enjoy Enjoy Enjoy. That’s what it comes down to, folks. That’s why Dan made this album, and that’s the highest compliment we can pay to any form of art.
